Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh – A festive Diwali night turned disastrous for a leather store in Jajmau, Kanpur, when a stray rocket ignited a massive fire at a tannery warehouse. The incident, which occurred around 9:30 PM on Monday, saw fierce flames engulfing the entire storage facility, with reports indicating the blaze was visible from as far as one kilometer away.
According to initial reports, a burning rocket reportedly entered the leather store, part of a tannery owned by Raja Singh in Jajmau’s Wajidpur area. With the tannery closed for the festival, only a few staff members were present when the rocket exploded inside the godown, quickly setting fire to stored leather and other materials. The rapid spread of the fire created a chaotic scene, prompting immediate alerts.
Tannery staff and local residents swiftly mobilized, attempting to douse the growing inferno with submersible pumps and other available means. Upon receiving the alarm, fire tenders from the fire department rushed to the site, joining the collective efforts. Raja Singh’s son, Naresh Singh, also arrived to oversee the situation. Through a concerted effort involving both fire personnel and the community, the blaze was successfully brought under control after approximately an hour.
Fortunately, no human casualties were reported in the devastating incident. However, the fire has resulted in substantial property damage, the full extent of which is still being assessed. Naresh Singh stated that the precise financial loss could not be determined immediately. Jajmau police station in-charge Jitendra Singh confirmed that the fire was extinguished with no loss of life and assured that action would be taken if an official complaint is lodged regarding the incident. The primary cause of the inferno is strongly believed to be the errant Diwali rocket.
