Five others were previously arrested.
Azamgarh police have made a significant breakthrough in the extensive ₹52.85 lakh financial fraud case linked to the District Jail’s inmate welfare fund. Neetu Yadav, wife of the alleged mastermind Ramjeet, has been arrested, bringing a key accomplice into custody and shedding more light on the elaborate scheme.
The fraud, spanning 18 months, involved former inmate Ramjeet Yadav, a resident of Bilariaganj, who systematically siphoned off funds from the jail’s ‘parashramik bandi khata’ – an account designated for the welfare and remuneration of prisoners. Working in collusion with jail accountant Musheer Ahmed, guard Awadhesh Pandey, and another released inmate Shivshankar Yadav alias Gorakh, Ramjeet allegedly forged the signatures of Jail Superintendent Aditya Kumar on numerous cheques to withdraw the substantial amount.
A significant portion of the embezzled funds was subsequently distributed across various accounts. Investigations revealed transfers of ₹2.40 lakh to Neetu Yadav’s account, ₹3 lakh to his mother Satmi Devi’s account, and approximately ₹30 lakh into Ramjeet’s personal account, indicating a clear pattern of financial gain for the family.
This latest arrest follows the apprehension of five other individuals involved in the case, including Ramjeet Yadav himself, Musheer Ahmed, Awadhesh Pandey, Shivshankar Yadav, and Ramjeet’s mother, Satmi Devi. All previously arrested suspects have been sent to judicial custody. The detention of Neetu Yadav underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to fully dismantle the network responsible for this high-profile embezzlement within a vital state institution.
