Bihar’s Chhath Puja 2025: A Resurgent Economy Fueled by Devotion and Billions in Trade
Bihar’s Chhath Puja 2025 is set to inject an estimated ₹500 crore into the state’s economy, driven by booming sales in fruit, clothing, and puja material markets. This revered festival is creating a vibrant commercial buzz across Patna and other regions, significantly benefiting local traders, artisans, and fostering widespread economic enthusiasm during the festive preparations.
As Bihar prepares for the auspicious Chhath Puja in 2025, the air is thick with anticipation, not just of devotion but also of a significant economic uplift. This revered festival, dedicated to the Sun God, is projected to generate a staggering business of nearly ₹500 crore, bringing an unparalleled vibrancy to local markets. From the bustling streets of Patna – including Kankarbagh, Boring Road, and Khetan Market – to smaller towns, the festive preparations have ignited a shopping spree, far exceeding previous years’ activity and providing a crucial boost to the state’s economy.
The fruit market is at the forefront of this commercial surge. Shashikant Prasad, President of the Patna Fruit and Vegetables Association, notes a robust supply of diverse produce from across India, including apples from Kashmir, oranges from Nagpur, and bananas from Hajipur. This sector alone is anticipated to contribute ₹100-150 crore. Simultaneously, the sale of essential puja materials like ‘soop,’ ‘daura,’ and clay stoves, sourced from states like Jharkhand and Bengal, is expected to fetch another ₹100-150 crore, according to Kamal Nopani, Chairman of CAT Bihar.
Adding to this economic wave, the clothing market is experiencing a tremendous boom. Ramlal Khetan of the Khetan Market Shopkeeper Association highlights the tradition of devotees and families purchasing new garments for the occasion, driving an estimated ₹150-200 crore in sales. This collective surge across key sectors underscores Chhath Puja’s profound impact, not only as a cultural cornerstone but also as a powerful engine for local commerce and economic prosperity in Bihar.
