Pakistan’s Seismic Surge: 4.7 Magnitude Quake Marks Third Tremor in Three Days

By Oct 22, 2025

Pakistan experienced its third earthquake in three days on Monday, a 4.7 magnitude tremor hitting at a shallow 10 km depth. Following moderate quakes over the weekend, this seismic activity highlights the nation’s geological vulnerability. Situated on active tectonic plate boundaries, authorities urge residents to remain alert for aftershocks and adhere to safety protocols.

Pakistan was rattled by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake on Monday, marking the third significant tremor to strike the nation within a 72-hour period. This latest seismic event, recorded at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), follows moderate 4.0 intensity quakes that occurred on Saturday and Sunday, signaling a period of heightened geological activity.

The Monday quake, which struck at 11:12 AM IST, saw its epicenter detailed by NCS at latitude 30.51 N and longitude 70.41 E. Experts have consistently warned that shallow earthquakes, like this recent one, pose a greater risk. With less distance for seismic waves to travel to the surface, they often translate into more intense shaking and potentially more widespread damage, as reported by news agency ANI.

Pakistan’s geographical location places it within a highly active seismic zone, intersected by several major fault lines. The country straddles the collision point of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Sindh and Punjab are situated on the northwestern fringe of the Indian plate. This ongoing tectonic convergence renders the region inherently susceptible to frequent and powerful earthquakes.

Historically, this area has endured devastating seismic events, including an 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Balochistan in 1945. While some regions, like Sindh, experience fewer tremors, no part of the country is entirely immune. Authorities are urging residents to maintain vigilance for potential aftershocks and to strictly adhere to established safety protocols. Seismologists continue to monitor the situation, underscoring that Pakistan’s unique geological makeup makes recurring seismic events an almost inevitable reality.
