Head-Turning Marketing: Fans Shave for Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’ Preview
Focus Features orchestrated an extraordinary early screening for the sci-fi comedy ‘Bugonia,’ starring Emma Stone and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, where attendees had to shave their heads. This bold, immersive marketing stunt, inspired by a pivotal plot point, generated significant buzz, drawing enthusiastic fans eager for a unique preview experience before its wider release.
In an audacious and highly unusual marketing move, Focus Features hosted an early Los Angeles screening for the upcoming sci-fi comedy ‘Bugonia,’ mandating that all attendees shave their heads prior to entry. The event, designed to generate buzz for the Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos collaboration, saw fans enthusiastically embrace the bald requirement.
The striking stipulation wasn’t arbitrary; it drew inspiration directly from a pivotal plot point in the film. ‘Bugonia’ features Emma Stone as Michelle Fuller, a pharmaceutical CEO whose head is controversially shaved by two conspiracy theorists convinced she is an alien. For those arriving with hair, barbers were conveniently stationed in the cinema foyer, offering complimentary services to ensure compliance.
Attendees shared diverse motivations for participating in the unique experience. Richard Chong, encouraged by his social circle, remarked, “I like the director. I think he’s really good, very weird and my friends hate my bowl cut, so this is for them, also my wife, she really hates it.” Others, like Sam Sherman from Los Angeles, viewed it as a perfect opportunity. “I was already thinking of shaving my head… that’s a perfect excuse because I want to see ‘Bugonia’ anyway and I get to see it two weeks early… and then I get a free haircut and a free movie. It’s hard to say no to that.”
Matthew Lopez, also from Los Angeles, found the bald-only policy an immersive extension of the film’s narrative. “It’s almost feeling immersive, like, ok, ‘I did it, she did it.’ I can feel some connection to the story,” he noted. This ingenious marketing stunt further solidifies the distinctive creative partnership between Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos, following their critically acclaimed work on ‘Poor Things’ and ‘The Favourite.’
‘Bugonia’ is scheduled for an initial limited release this Friday, with a nationwide US rollout anticipated on October 31.
