East Champaran’s Forgotten Legacy: JP Ashram in Patahi Crumbles Under Encroachment
The historic JP Ashram in Patahi, East Champaran, a pivotal site for Jayaprakash Narayan’s Sampoorna Kranti, faces severe neglect and brazen encroachment. Once a hub for revolutionary planning and a scene of local sacrifices, the ashram’s land is being illegally occupied with dumped materials. Locals urgently demand government intervention to reclaim and preserve this vital historical monument for future generations.
Patahi, East Champaran – A site profoundly etched in India’s democratic struggle, the Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) Ashram in Patahi, is slowly succumbing to neglect and illegal encroachment. Once a strategic hub where blueprints for the historic Sampoorna Kranti (Total Revolution) were forged, this revered memorial now stands as a stark symbol of official apathy, its hallowed grounds being brazenly occupied.
The ashram holds immense historical significance. Following his iconic call for Sampoorna Kranti in Patna on June 5, 1974, Jayaprakash Narayan visited Patahi. During the tumultuous Emergency period, a massive public assembly was held here. The movement escalated, leading to a siege of local administrative offices. Tragically, three local youths were martyred when the then-Circle Officer ordered firing on protestors, a poignant reminder of sacrifices made for freedom.
The six-kattha land for this ashram was generously donated by late Avdhesh Singh of Khutauna village, inspired by JP’s ideals. Officially registered under the Bihar government, four rooms were constructed for revolutionary meetings and public welfare programs. However, decades of neglect have taken their toll. The ashram premises now resemble a forgotten pasture, with cattle grazing freely, and its main entrance choked by illegally dumped sand and stones—a clear attempt at encroachment.
Despite repeated pleas, neither local administration nor elected representatives have shown initiative to protect this invaluable heritage. The very identity of the JP Ashram, a beacon of revolutionary spirit, is fading. Local residents urgently appeal to the state government to conduct an immediate inspection, clear all encroachments, and undertake comprehensive preservation measures. Their demand is clear: safeguard JP’s legacy and ensure future generations connect with this crucial chapter of Indian history.
