Uttarakhand Weather Takes a Turn: Post-Diwali Rain and Snowfall Alert for Mountains

By Oct 22, 2025

Uttarakhand’s post-Diwali weather has shifted dramatically. A new Western Disturbance is bringing clouds, rain, and snowfall warnings to the mountainous regions. After a dry festive period, temperatures are dropping across areas including Dehradun. Residents in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh should prepare for light precipitation, potential lightning, and snow above 3500 meters, marking a noticeable change from previous warm conditions.

Following a remarkably clear and sunny Diwali, Uttarakhand’s weather has undergone a significant transformation. The festive warmth, marked by dry conditions and persistent sunshine across most regions, gave way to a distinct change by Tuesday. Dehradun and surrounding areas, which had enjoyed bright days, are now experiencing an interplay of sun and clouds, signaling the arrival of a fresh weather system.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for rain and snowfall in the higher reaches of the state, attributing this shift to the active presence of a Western Disturbance. While Diwali saw pleasant, if slightly warm, conditions even into the evenings, the post-festival period brings a noticeable drop in temperatures. Morning and evening chills are intensifying, particularly in the mountains where a biting cold is setting in, and frost is becoming common in the plains.

Specifically, light to very light rain is anticipated in districts such as Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, and Rudraprayag. Elevations above 3500 meters are expected to witness very light to light snowfall. A ‘Yellow Alert’ has also been issued for isolated areas, cautioning against thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. This sudden meteorological shift urges residents and visitors to prepare for cooler, wetter conditions as winter begins to tighten its grip on the Himalayan state.
