Global AWS Outage Plunges Major Online Services into Downtime, Root Cause Identified
Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a significant global outage on Monday, crippling popular platforms like Snapchat, Fortnite, and Prime Video. The disruption, primarily centered in the US-East-1 region, was linked to a DNS resolution issue affecting its core DynamoDB service. Millions of users and businesses faced access issues, highlighting the widespread dependency on AWS cloud infrastructure.
A major disruption to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s leading cloud computing platform, sent shockwaves across the internet on Monday, leaving millions of users and businesses without access to critical online services. The widespread outage impacted a vast array of popular applications and websites globally, underscoring the interconnected nature of modern digital infrastructure.
Among the high-profile services affected were social media giant Snapchat, gaming platforms Fortnite and Roblox, financial apps Robinhood and Coinbase, payment service Venmo, and even Amazon’s own Prime Video and e-commerce site. The disruption spanned multiple sectors, from entertainment and finance to communication, demonstrating the pervasive reach of AWS’s infrastructure.
AWS swiftly acknowledged the incident, pinpointing the US-East-1 region in Northern Virginia – one of its largest data hubs – as the epicentre of the problem. The company identified a “potential root cause” related to a DNS resolution issue impacting its DynamoDB API endpoint, a fundamental database service leveraged by countless online platforms. Increased error rates and latencies were confirmed across several key AWS services and global features reliant on the affected region.
Outage tracker DownDetector recorded thousands of reports, with US-East-1 accounting for approximately 77% of disruptions, though ripple effects were also observed in US-West regions. While AWS engineers worked diligently to restore full functionality, applying initial mitigations and observing early signs of recovery, the company cautioned that some service requests might continue to fail as they moved toward a complete resolution.
