Diwali Fire Surge: Delhi Fire Service on Edge with 400+ Calls, No Casualties Reported

Delhi witnessed a significant surge in fire incidents this Diwali, with the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) receiving over 400 calls – a substantial increase from last year. Operating on high alert, the department deployed all personnel and equipment. Despite challenges from crackers, diyas, and narrow lanes, the DFS’s rapid response successfully averted casualties, underscoring their critical preparedness.

Delhi experienced an unprecedented surge in fire-related emergencies this Diwali, with the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) responding to over 400 calls across the capital. This marked a significant increase from the previous year, placing the department on an unwavering high alert throughout the festive period.

The DFS had meticulously prepared for the anticipated festive rush, cancelling all staff leaves and ensuring every vehicle and firefighting apparatus was battle-ready. This proactive strategy proved crucial as calls poured in, predominantly concerning minor fires ignited by celebratory firecrackers and traditional diyas. By midnight, 269 calls had been logged, escalating to nearly 400 by early morning, starkly contrasting with 318 calls received on Diwali last year.

Firefighters faced formidable challenges, navigating Delhi’s often congested and narrow bylanes to reach incident sites, while the continuous use of fireworks exacerbated the risk. Despite the intensity of the situation, a major relief came from the fact that no fatalities or serious injuries were reported. The DFS maintained continuous deployment of rapid action teams and personnel at all fire stations, ensuring swift intervention.

While many incidents were contained quickly, the night also saw more significant blazes, such as a fierce fire in the Narela industrial area, which required 16 fire tenders to bring under control. Similar incidents, including a flat fire in Greater Noida and multiple shop fires, underscored the widespread nature of the emergency. The Delhi Fire Service’s rigorous preparation and tireless efforts were instrumental in safeguarding lives and property amidst the city’s fiery Diwali celebrations.
