Cosmic Celebration: Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Unveils India’s Dazzling Diwali Glow from Space

By Oct 22, 2025

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla captivated millions by sharing a viral video of India’s Diwali celebrations from orbit. His stunning footage, captured during an earlier mission, depicted cities ablaze with light, shimmering like constellations against the dark expanse of space. Shukla’s poetic “Diwali of Earth” message offered a profound, cosmic perspective on the festival of lights.

In an awe-inspiring Diwali tribute, Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla offered humanity a breathtaking celestial perspective of India, showcasing the nation’s vibrant festival of lights from his vantage point aboard the International Space Station. The viral video, shared earlier this year on X (formerly Twitter), quickly captivated millions, bridging terrestrial celebration with cosmic wonder.

Captured from the space station’s observation module during his 18-day orbital mission, Shukla’s footage sweeps majestically across the subcontinent, from the sunlit southwest to the misty northeast. Cities across India glow brilliantly, transforming the landscape into an intricate tapestry of light. Shukla, known as “Shux,” eloquently described the spectacle: “Flying over India from space… is like watching a living galaxy unfurl beneath you.” He noted the country’s radiance was unmistakable even from hundreds of kilometers above, writing, “The peninsula glows like a jewel… Pune sparkles; Bengaluru and Hyderabad shimmer like constellations drawn by human hands,” with New Delhi’s faint gleam visible on the horizon.

Beyond human festivities, the astronaut’s lens also captured nature’s own pyrotechnics. Flashes of lightning, described as “purple flares,” illuminated the Bay of Bengal and central India, a powerful reminder of “the original artist of light.” As the spacecraft continued north, the scene transitioned from radiant plains to the dark silhouettes of the Himalayas, culminating in an ethereal orbital sunrise painting the upper atmosphere in soft blue.

Shukla concluded his poignant post: “This isn’t just Diwali on Earth, it’s Diwali of Earth. The festival of lights, written across an entire nation, glowing proudly on a cosmic stage.” For countless viewers, Shukla’s unique video and profound words offered an elevated appreciation for Diwali, uniting its festive spirit with the vast expanse of the cosmos.
